Articles» Chick Corea, by Jim Macnie

Many jazz musicians hold the mystery of the moment in high regard. In the blink of an eye, a musical feeling might change ─ intensify or dissolve, erupt or disappear. The options available to an improviser at any given section of a tune are what attracts so many free thinkers to jazz. Pianist/composer Chick Corea is certainly part of that respected crowd. One of the music's most successful bandleaders, his regard for spontaneous invention couldn't be any higher.

Articles: A Late Night at Dizzy’s: Chick Corea & Marcus Roberts’ Jam Session (~www.chickcorea.com)

From "Notes from the Road, A Road Journal from the World of Chick"
By Chick Corea; on January 27, 2011

After Chick’s set with Wynton Marsalis and the Jazz at Lincoln Center, he checked out the Marcus Roberts Trio show—here’s Chick’s take on it:

Tonight was a wild and special night. The JALC band smoked and my Gayle was a highlight for the audience and the band, singing on “You’re Everything.” The night was filled with great moments.

But after the show was the best! Gayle and I, along with Lew Solof and Fred Sherry, went over to Dizzy’s Club to see Marcus Roberts trio. After Marcus played 2 wonderful trio pieces, he invited guys up to sit in and it turned out to be an incredible jam. Reminded me of the ’60s.

I played four hands with Marcus, Wynton and a bunch of other guys from the JALC band sat in and it was a Jam Party!! Marcus is an incredible musician. We had a memorable blast!

Interviews » Maarten De Haan interview with
Chick Corea (October 23, 1994)

(MdH:) Mr. Corea, you have just founded the jazz label Stretch Records. Does this mean that you will be moving away from being purely a musician? Does it entail management tasks for you?

(CC:) With Stretch Records? Oh none, none. My only requirement in accepting the challenge of putting a record label together was that I would not have to administratively run it at all. It is not my desire to change my efforts from making music into something else. But I wanted to use the fact that I could help some of the musicians whom I like and who have come through my band sometimes, as well as other young musicians, to have an opportunity to make their music.
