Born and raised in Harlem, NY, Sharon L. West is an 8 octave singer being pegged to be a performance wonder soon on her way to staying around for a long time as a progressive artist, musician, songwriter, producer and vocalist. She uses her voice in ways that draws vibrations from the floor and walls not heard since the great singers and the way classic saxophones did in the 30's, 40's and 50's. Her voice has been compared by music professionals and the public as the sound of old saxophones when she reaches for deeper notes and styling as, "She moves a building", Mr. Gruff, host at The New Amsterdam Musical Association.
Ms. West recently completed a Master songwriting course that she had to audition for,- only 9 out of more than 50 made the cut,- with Professor and award-winning theater and music producer Andy Warshaw who is currently writing a six hour opera and has credits to his name that includes collaborations with director/writer, George C. Wolfe and filmmaker, Richard Schlesinger. Sharon is also re-learning classic guitar, bass, piano and two languages while still attending college full-time. One of her favorite past-times is creating beats and composing using DAW and her AxiomPro49. She is well versed in Logic Studio and spent time as a A&R professional.
"What I really would love to learn is the kora and cello in my life time; as well as, train in opera seriously."
Ms. West was born to pure Cherokee and West-Indian American parents from a land once frequently visited by cruise ships from around the world that housed various top recording studios; one of which Mick Jagger owned and operated for his band, The Rolling Stones, for many years. Her entire family is from Montserrat which is best known for a 15 minute getaway oasis from the more commonly known Antigua. Montserrat was nearly completely destroyed by a volcano eruption in 2005 after it had been dormant for 400 years. Only the Northern area known as the "safe zone" housing less than 1000 people now exists for habitation.
“My mother’s parents migrated to and lived most of their adult lives in America, but my father’s parents, well, their graves now lay under more than thirty to fifty feet of volcanic ash.”
Soft Moments, one of her new CD's is a compilation of songs frequently requested of her to sing from fans around the world who have witnessed her at corporate events, Central Park, Algonquin Hotel, The Apollo Theater, various upscale restaurants, cultural centers and open mics across the Tri-state area; predominately. The CD has been created in a style to specifically tell a story of a character going through a love cycle that many who have been in relationships young or mature can relate. There are a couple of tracks not performed completely for this reason of threading the storyline. When one listens to the CD, it becomes evident why and understood that the purchase of the entire CD will prove to be a full body, emotional experience. The CD is based on easlistening and jazz classics with several tracks written by the artist including, "Let It Rain" and the house remake of "You'll See" that is already getting air play at brick and mortar and online radio stations.
