ASTRUD GILBERTO

Astrud Gilberto (born: 1940) was a young Brazilian housewife when fame beckoned. In a New York recording studio in 1963 with her then-husband, the singer-songwriter-guitarist Joao Gilberto, Astrud was asked by Stan Getz (over Joao and Antonio Carlos Jobim's objections) to sing the English lyric to Jobim's "The Girl from Ipanema".

Little did anyone know that it would sell millions, win a Grammy for 'Record of the Year', and catapult Astrud into a solo career that has lasted almost 25 years.
